NewsGuard has identified what appears to be a network of unreliable AI-generated sites operating in the Italian language. As defined by NewsGuard, 'Unreliable AI-Generated News' or 'UAIN' sites are sites that operate with little or no human oversight and publish articles that are largely or entirely by bot. Over the past month, the number of UAIN sites identified by NewsGuard analysts in its AI Monitoring Center increased from 49 to 277. In June, NewsGuard analysts identified 36 Italian-language UAIN sites, each of which indicates a postal address in Bari as its headquarters. However, all the site domains were registered in Manacor, in the Balearic Islands, through Soluciones Corporativas IP, a company that deals with domain management. On their pages dedicated to legal notices, all sites declare that they belong to an unidentified person named “Rosa Rossi”.
NewsGuard was unable to determine whether DY Leads this is a real or fictitious name. ERROR MESSAGES NewsGuard found several examples of error messages typically produced by chatbots on all 36 sites, a sign that chatbots are likely operating with little or no human oversight. Sites regularly publish low-quality content, and in at least some cases, NewsGuard has been able to verify that it is content produced by artificial intelligence. These include articles that present outdated information as if it were recent , that provide incorrect or unsubstantiated information about public figures , that use misleading headlines , and that promote unproven weight loss remedies . For example, an article published on June 25 on the UAIN website , titled “The truth about Bianca Berlinguer's blind husband,” incorrectly stated in the second paragraph that the husband of Italian journalist and television presenter Bianca Berlinguer was “Fabio Calvi, a well-known Italian financier". In reality, Berlinguer's current husband is the Italian politician Luigi Manconi.
The article also included error messages typical of AI chatbots. A SINGLE AUTHOR Typically, each site in the network attributes all its content - including news on celebrities, health, fitness and meditation - to a single author, whose biographical profile and photo, however, appear not to be authentic. For example, on June 28, 2023, published 75 articles attributed to an author named “Valentina Bianchi Greco.” An image search of his photo of her revealed that it was taken from , a stock image site. All of the sites' domains were registered between March 3 and May 22, 2023. As of July 5, none of the sites had programmatic advertising and the articles did not appear to have been shared on social networks.
