I'm so overwhelmed by life right now and so drained because of it. I try to be as productive as possible but I keep failing and it is just a vicious circle.
What do you do when you feel this way?

It might sound counterproductive as you are trying to be productive, but take a hot shower/bath and then give yourself a day (at least a few hours) to just relax or sleep. The more you push against it, the more your body and mind will burn themselves out. You basically need to take a day or two to hit the reset button to be back to form. That's what always works for me at least.

Sounds like you need to take a vacation or do something fun and let go of some daily stuff.

Just taking some time off as the others have already mentioned. A bit of a break from trying to be productive can sort of help you reset which is good.

I know a lot of people mention taking sabbaticals these days, which is a full month off, though it's not usually paid.

And we're back to the paid time off discussion. I know it's been mentioned before but it's just crazy to me that you guys don't get a period off from work whilst still getting paid. Even as a part-time worker in the UK, I can get around 15-20 days off, fully paid.

Most companies in the USA do provide PTO, but the sabbatical I mentioned is something different, and usually you have to work at a place a good while before qualifying for it if its even offered.

Whenever I am feeling particularly overwhelmed (or out of control emotionally) hanging out for a couple of hours in nature usually does the trick. If that's not an option at the moment, I tend to write down all of my thoughts so I can offload my brain a bit and low my thoughts down.

Sometimes when we are drained it’s because we have too many things on our list. I remember to practice Self-Care. When I find there are so many things on my mind, I make a To-do list. Some add in pros & cons that may be helpful. Seeing what I have to do helps get it out of my head. Very important also is to add in that list relaxation. Whether that is reminding yourself to take a hot bath, practicing yoga, going for a walk. Even vegging in front of the TV if that calms you down. It’s OKAY to say NO & to cross off things on your list that you really don’t want to do & it doesn’t need to be done by YOU.
