I view poetry as my first love as an artist… I’ve dabbled in other arts e.g. stories, photography, digital art, etc thanks to the inspiration of others (mostly on this very forum) but poetry for me was my first “thing”.
I remember feeling that high for the first time back in the 5th grade when my classmates and friends ooo’ed and ahh’ed about a poetry assignment I did. I’ve been chasing that same high ever since, it’s addictive receiving feedback on writing!
I found myself wanting to learn and observe as much poetry as I could manage which made me stumble on a poetry forum which I absolutely fell in love with. I remember feeling the heartbreak when I logged on one day to find that the forum no longer existed. That’s when Serene Distraction was born. SD started off as a poetry forum but became so much more.
What was your first exposure to poetry? Can you tell us about your first experience with poetry as a writer? How has it affected you?

My first exposure was probably Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends". One of my older sisters got it as a birthday gift from an aunt when I was probably 5 or 6. My sister wasn't interested but I started reading young and would devour anything I could. I loved it and would try to come up with little rhymes myself to amuse my family. When I got older, I started writing them down. I found that poetry was a great way to deal with all the emotions I was having difficulty articulating out loud, both happy and sad. Then I stumbled on this little site called Serene Distraction where I could get feedback from other writers on my work and I was truly addicted, though I'd like to think I've grown as a poet in the years since first posting here.
