Today while talking to a coworker, I discovered her love for writing. She’s a little like me, she likes to write but then it seems she loses motivation and stops writing after a bit. She let me read the story she has been working on, it’s a romance. She was telling me she was a little stuck right now and needed motivation to move forward. A little shy and hesitant at first, she asked if I would read her story. I did and it seemed like it made her day, like reading her book was a treat to her. She even asked for my feedback.
I explained my process like this; my creativity is like a pitcher filled with water. Once I pour it all out I have to wait for it to refill. I told her about where my ideas come from, how I stem from emotion to stew a great idea. What I was good at and what I’m not good at, then gave her feedback on her work. I complemented certain things and gave her suggestions on what I would consider looking at. She was really happy about it, excited even.
She, however, doesn’t realize that she made ME feel really good. I felt like a real writer helping out another. I’m no professional by any means, but it did encourage me. I helped her refill her pitcher.
What refills yours?

Thinking about it I think my inspiration is fueled by tuning into my emotions. Ideas can hit me fast but just as quickly they dissipate rapidly if I don't tie it with an emotion. When I used to have long commutes I would record myself because for some reason that drive home is when I would allow myself to tune into what I was feeling.
