As it is from the creators of the Underworld movies, I was expecting good things from Blood and Chocolate. I was slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the movie was good, but not great. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what was wrong with it. The characters, Vivian (Bruckner) and Aiden (Dancy) were interesting, though a little underdeveloped and the actors played them well. The story had potential and there were no gaping plot holes or continuity issues. Even so, this movie leaves you feeling a little unsatisfied.
The movie is about a young werewolf (Vivian, played by Bruckner) who is forced to decide between her destiny within her pack and a handsome young artist (Aiden, played by Dancy) who she has fallen for. At first, she tries to keep her relationship with Aiden a secret to protect him from the pack leader, Gabriel - the man she is destined to marry. When Gabriel discovers Vivian and Aiden's relationship, he sends his son Rafe (played by Brian Dick) to force Aiden out of Romania. An accident leaves Rafe dead and the pack out for Aiden's blood. Vivian must choose between loyalty to her pack and her love for Aiden.
While predictable, the story held my interest, most likely due to the fact that I was expecting some iota of the spark that made the Underworld movies good. There was no spark in Blood and Chocolate. The special effects were fine, though some of the human to wolf transitions were laughable.
This movie's redeeming factor was the use of real wolves as opposed to some horror-image werewolf idea. Still, it was lacking. Lacking what? I'm not quite sure I can put my finger on it.
While Blood and Chocolate is not bad, it's not great either. I give it 2.75 out of 5.
Blood and Chocolate will be available on Tuesday, June 12th
