First off, since this is the very first post of it's kind - welcome to the Review boards! Now, onto the review. . . .
"The Messengers" is a a film of the horror genre about a family that moves from a troubled life in Chigaco to an old sunflower farm in North Dakota. The farm once housed the Rollins family which had just disappeared six years before the events of the movie take place. When the family's teenage daughter, Jess (played by Kristen Stewert) starts seeing strange things in the house, her parents are quick to dismiss her fears as cries for attention. Only Jess and her three-year-old brother Ben can see the ghosts that replay horrid final moments in the house. When the ghosts become more and more dangerous, it is up to Jess to make her parents believe and protect her family.
Surprisingly, this movie was rather good. To seasoned horror movie buffs, I highly doubt the films creep-factor will have much of an effect. However, for those who are new to the genre or just plain squeamish, "The Messengers" may prove rather frightening. The plot, unlike many recent movies of the horror genre, was actually somewhat thought out and interesting.
The acting was far better than expected, with Kristen Stewart giving a believable performance as a troubled teen experiencing horrible fears all while trying to protect people who think her crazy or starving for attention. The twin boys who played three-year-old Ben were absolutely adorable, which as most horror fans know, simply added to the creepiness of his involvement with the house's ghosts.
Overall, this movie exceeded my expectations. It was entertaining and well thought-out for the most part. If you are a fan of the horror genre, this is a must see. You may like it, you may not. I happened to enjoy it.
"The Messengers" will be released on Tuesday, June 5th
