Life is a journey. As one journey begins another ends. There are both exciting and saddening experiences. But sometimes, one journey turns into a battle of sheer survival.
John was beginning to walk out of his Algebra class. He knew he had failed because he slept through a quarter of the classes. John is more of the lazy type. He has short dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He always enjoyed a good adventure in spite of his laziness. On his way out of class, he spotted his two good friends, Jared and Sarah, having a very loud argument that echoed through the school. “Hey guys, what’s up?” asked John to his two friends. Sarah began to glare at him and stomped off. “Wow, what’s her problem?” “Shut up!” exclaimed Jared as he slammed his fist into the nearest locker. He began to storm off into the opposite direction that Sarah had gone. “Did I miss something?” John asked himself.
Another tireless school day had passed once again. Now it was time for the weekend to begin. John began walking home. The light from the sun was so intense on John’s way home that he had began walking in the middle of the street. All of a sudden, he hears Jared scream, “Watch out!” Jared sent John flying into a bush after John was smacked by Jarred’s bike. “What the hell do you think you are doing? You okay?” “Yeah, I’m fine, just a little bruised,” answered John. “Good. I…uh…wanted to…” “Don’t worry about it. We all have a moment,” said John. “Hey, can you call me around six tonight John?” asked Jared. “Sure, what’s it about?” “You’ll see,” answered Jarred with a wry grin on his face. “Talk to you tonight” shouted John as Jared began riding home.
John got home a few minutes later. When he got inside, he saw his mom cooking dinner. “Hi mom.” “Oh, hi honey. We are having steak tonight, okay?” “That’s cool,” answered John. He went to his room to begin his homework for English, but decided just to go watch television down stairs. After an hour of MTV, the time was 3:30. He decided it would be a good idea to go take a rest before dinner. He went off to his room and fell face first into his bed. Falling asleep, no matter what condition he was in, was easy for John. As it was, he fell asleep, not knowing what dwells inside of him at that moment.
A few months before, his mother and him were watching television, when his father came in with a stern look on his face. “I’m heading out for Iraq,” said his father. “What!” shouted John and his mother in unison. “ I got a call from my war buddy saying that the army is in need of recruits, so I decided to enlist once again.” “B…B…But what about your family?” asked John’s mother. “You guys will be fine, I know you will.” “You already served for 25 years, isn’t that enough?” asked John with a hint of anger in his voice. “Now son…” began his father, but John went to his room with fury welling up inside him.
During his dream, John found himself in a hall that seemed to never end. He began to walk slowly, so he would not make a sound. All of a sudden, a dark shadow began to engulf the hall. He ran as swiftly as he could away from the shadow until he began to fall into nothing. He began floating into what looked like a small, disfigured room. He noticed a door in front of him. Searching around the room for another way out, he finds going through the door is the only exit. He begins to slowly reach for the tarnished doorknob. As soon as he had touched it, the door flew open. To his astonishment, he saw a girl in a white gown on the floor curled up in a tiny ball. She began to stand up. John noticed her long dark hair and her thin figure. “Who are you?” asked John. “Help me,” answered the girl in a petite voice. “ Don’t let them get me.”
John woke up in a puddle of sweat on his bed. He began to recall his dream and of what had happened. Suddenly, he remembered to call Jared. He looked at the clock. It read 6:10. “Oh crap!” John rushed to the telephone and dialed Jared’s number. “ Hey, Jared?” “ You’re always late,” answered Jared. “ What did you want me to call you for?” “ Go to the dock behind the old warehouse on Argus Road,” said Jared. “ Fine, I’ll be there, see ya.” John hung up the phone and began down the stairs. “ Wait, where are you going,” asked his mom. “ I’m going to see Jared.” “ Be careful,” said his mom with a worried expression.
The sun had begun to set by the time he had reached the dock. He saw Sarah and Jared talking. “ I thought you two were at each other’s throats?” “ Oh, shut up John,” shouted Sarah. “ Glad you could make it John,” said Jared in a collective voice. “ So what did you want to talk to me about?” “I’ve got this great idea for an invention and-” “Let me guess,” interrupted John, “ You want us to give you some money that we supposedly have, am I right?” “ You are just jealous that Jared here actually has a brain that works, unlike you,” said Sarah in her usual way. Jared is one of those kids that are perfect. He has straight A’s, a great job, and great friends. He always comes up with some crazy idea that “ Will change the course of mankind”. Sarah always goes with his ideas. Sarah has had a kind of crush on Jared ever since he moved to the town three years ago.
“So what is this great idea,” asked John reluctantly. “Well maybe we could all chip in about three hundred dollars each so we could-,” “Three hundred dollars!” interrupted John again. “Okay maybe that is a little much, but the prize is great.” “Thanks, but no thanks,” exclaimed John. “Oh, give him a chance John,” Sarah yelled. “If you want to flush three hundred dollars down the drain than be my-,” just then, the dock began to shake. “W…W…What’s that,” asked Sarah to the two bewildered boys. “We better get out of here,” exclaimed Jared. The other two nodded in unison and began sprinting to the land. As they were running, the dock shook more and more violently. “Hurry!” shrieked Sarah. The dock began to break off. “Oh no!” they all screamed. They frantically ran around trying to find someway off. A great whirlpool was forming around them. They were now being sucked down. As Sarah tried frantically to get the attention of others, they were whipping around the whirlpool violently. They made one last try to get the attention of others, but the whirlpool had engulfed them before another word could escape their lips.
