Chapter One
It was a cold November night in the yearof 1942.
I don’t exactly recall what date it was, but
what happened that day, I will never forget.
I was about 15 and my younger siblings
and I where getting ready for bed while
mother and father where out.“Sophia,” my
youngest sister said to me, “When will
mommy and daddy come home?” “Shortly
Elisabeth.” I said as I was looking out the window. I
didn’t want to admit it, but I was getting worried
about them. Elisabeth sat down at my feet. “ Please
braid my hair Sohpia!” She sat down and handed
me her brush. I sat on our bed and brushed her
long black hair, which she had a lot of for her
young age of five. While we sat, she talked and
talked about a new American girl in our
apartment.
I heard my twin brothers fighting in the
background. “ Jason, Bradley Stop that right
now.” I shouted as I turned around. I looked back
and saw my parents walking back from service.
They didn’t tell us why they went and wouldn’t let
us come with them. “Mother and father are
home!” My brothers jumped into their bed and
pretended to be asleep. My parents walked in and
all I saw was the look of sadness in my mother’s
eyes. My father said that they had a long day at
the worship service and that they needed their rest
so we had to go bed too. My sister and I got in our
bed and she fell asleep instantly while I tossed and
turned.
Over the last seven years Hitler’s army
invaded my home county of Austria.. I was only 10
years old but I remember how scared I was I was
when the soldiers came in. Soon they where on
every main street , little did I know that was just
the beginning. Soon after that all Jews had a
curfew and children couldn’t even go to school.
And worst of all was the Star of David patch we
had to wear and that most Jews couldn’t go to
work anymore. My father was one of those Jews.
Food was scarce for all Jews. Then, when I
thought the worst of it was over, the concentration
camps and killing began. Many Jews disappeared forever.
I woke up and quietly got out of bed. My siblings where still in bed and I could
hear my father snoring in the small room next to
me. I got dressed and went to the living room. My
mother left me a note with some money. She
wanted me to go to the store so I got my coat and
walked down the stairs. I walked to the small
market that was one of the few stores still run by a
Jew named Jake. Jake was old and weak, yet he
still tended to his shop. Most non- Jews where to
scared to go in there because they where afraid of
the what the soldiers might do to them. Yet as I
walked in, I saw a girl, about my age. I listened to
her as she spoke to the man over the counter. I
knew she was the American girl my sister told me
about. It scared me a bit because she had some of
my features. She was skinny, had straight light
brown hair, round hazel eyes and was a bit taller
than me. I got what little food we could afford and
walked up to the counter.
