I woke up the next morning to the sounds of my mother talking to Emily's mother. I walked over to the shut door and listened.
“Melissa, are you sure she will be safe?” I heard my mother ask.
“Yes, I’m positive, there is a slight chance our plan will go wrong. Trust me.” Her mom said.
“What are you doing by the door like that?” I jumped.
“Oh, hi Emily! Ididn’t know you where awake!” I said.
“What are you doing?” She asked staring at me.
I shifted uncomfortably.
“Come on.” She said as she pulled me away from the door. “Let’s go pack your belongings up. Your mother is here to pick you up.” She said.
I walked with my mother back to our apartment in silence.
“Did you have fun at the Morgan’s house?” My mother asked me.
“Yes, ma’am.” I said looking down.
“Are you all right sweetie?” “You don’t seem like yourself” She said.
“Yes mother, I’m OK.” I said to her.
‘Don’t worry, you will be going back to her house real soon.”
For some strange reason, I didn’t like the way my mother said that. I didn’t know what my mother was saying this morning to Mrs. Morgan, but I had the feeling it was something horrible. I didn’t know what exactly they talked about but as we walked in our room, I sat on my bed and tried to remember what my mother said. Are you sure she will be safe? What did that mean? And who was “she”? Why does it seem like Emily knows what is happening and I’m still clueless. I was washing our clothing when my mother walked in to help me. I knew it was a bad idea, but I had to ask her anyway.
I blurted out. “ What were you and Mrs. Morgan talking about this morning?”
My mother turned and looked at me in shock. “What are you talking about, Sophia?”
“Mom, I know you and Mrs. Morgan where talking about something important. You said someone was going to be safe. Who?”
My mother looked at me angrily and said. “That was none of your business!” “You shouldn’t ease drop on people like that!”
“But mother!” I said. She cut me off and said. “Sophia, never mind it!”
I tried to remain calm but I just lost it. “Emily knows, doesn’t she!” “You never tell me anything anymore!”
I ran to the bathroom, because it was the only room with a lock, and cried myself to sleep. When I woke up, I felt horrible. My body ached because I slept on the hard floor and all I could remember was the argueement I had with my mother. We hardly ever fought. Then again, she hardly ever lied to me. I just couldn’t understand why Emily knew what was happening and I didn’t. What was my mother trying to hide from me and why? I hated it. It was probaly wrong for me to yell at her like that. I shouldn’t have done that. But why did she have to act like nothing had happened? I decided to apologize to her. I unlocked the door and went to her room, but when I got there, my mom was gone. Instead, siting on her bed where Mr. and Mrs. Morgan. And next to them, was my backpack.
