A few weeks went by and soon, the cold snow came in. It was December 20th and only 5 days till Christmas. I had to celebrate Christmas with them. For the first time in my life, I couldn’t light the menorah or get gifts on all the nights of Hanukkah. It was odd to see a Christmas tree and learn carols that all Christian children know. My favorite Christmas songs are ironically the same
as Emily’s, Silent Night and O Holy Night. It was difficult for me to learn them, but I learned them quickly. We had been singing carols since the second to last week in November. I had fun helping Mrs. Morgan baking cookies and watching Mr. Martin cut down the tree. The best part was helping put the lights on the tree and putting the star on top. And for the first time ever, I
tasted egg nog. It was strange at first, but now I love it’s smooth and bold taste as it hits my throat. On Christmas eve, we got a letter from Emily and my family. It was very dangerous of them to send us letters, but the man who gave us the letter looked like no mail man. And he delived it to us in the middle of the night. We read the note from Emily first.
Dear mom, dad, and Sophia,
It has been an odd month. It has been very quiet and calm so far. No one has came to the door of our safe place yet. I hope you are having fun with Christmas, Sophia. Hanukkah has been very fun. We have to keep quiet while we celebrate and we have little gifts that the nice people on the outside of our safe place gives us. Today, I got a new stationary kit, which is what I’m
writing on. I am also told that your sister got a doll and your brothers got a new deck of cards. I look at your photos everyday. I miss you momma and poppa! Sophia, I hope you enjoy the gifts you get. I picked them out. They come all the way from America. Hope to see you soon!
I decided to read the note from my parents in private latter. Mr. Morgan told me to get some rest so Santa could come and visit me. I was eager to sleep because Santa never visited my house. Mrs. Morgan told me about him and he seemed like a jolly old man. And his gifts came all the way from the north pole. I couldn’t wait to see what gifts his elf made for me. So I kissed
them all got night and reminded them to leave Santa some hot apple cider and cookies, and to put the fire out of the fire place. Then, quickly jumped in bed. I woke up the next morning and ran into the living room. There where little packages under the tree. I ran through the apartment yelling
“Santa has come!!! Look, look!! Santa has brought us lots and lots of gifts!”
I stood outside the Morgan’s bedroom door as I heard them getting out of bed. As soon as they opened the door, I ran to the gifts. I held them and waited till the Morgans came. I looked through the gifts and handed them all of there packages. Then I carefully opened mine. I did not want to rip the wrapping because they looked so beautiful.
“Emily, what are you doing?” Mr. Morgan asked.
For the first time I responded to him calling me Emily.
I looked up and said. “Father, the paper is too wonderful to tear.”
I smiled as I carefully put the paper down and looked at my gift. The Morgans laughed and told me they had never seen anyone open their gifts so carefully . I was so happy to see what I had received. I got two new books, a card game, a ball, a game, a puzzle, and my two favorite gifts of all. They where the ones Emily got me from America, a porcelain doll and a music box. I put them carefully in her room, on her dresser, right next to her photo. I sat on the bed and read a book the Morgans got me. It was about a Jewish girl who went to the North Pole to see if her Christian friends told her the truth about a man named Santa Clause. While I read, I smelled the food that Mrs. Morgan was cooking. I smiled. For the first time in six years I felt safe. Which made me feel bad, considering where my family was. We all sat down and ate supper. Mr. Morgan told me stories about his childhood in Canada and Mrs. Morgan talked about her’s in America. They talked about how they met when Mrs. Morgan moved to Canada and fell in love as soon as they met. And made me remember how my parents met. I suddenly felt guilty about where I was, in a nice, warm home with plenty to eat. My poor family must be staved and scared. Yet here I am safe and full. And Emily, she just met me once, just once, and she was willing to give up everything so I could be free. No one has ever done that for me before. And I would have never expected someone I just met to do that for me. When I went to my room, I remembered that I hadn’t read the letter from my parents yet. So I opened it up and read it.
Our dearest Sophia,
Hello sweetie. I’m sorry we didn’t tell you our plan, but we couldn’t let you know. I hope you don’t hate us for not telling you. Your brothers and sister went into hiding also. It is just us and Emily. It is best for you not to know where your siblings are, not yet at least. Your father and I don’t even know where they are ourselfs. All this will be over soon. We will be back together.
Whatever they do to us, we will always be together in sprit. Don’t worry about us. We will write to you every month, if we miss a month, know that something happened. Don’t fell bad dear. I know we fought right before we went into hiding and I know you are having a bad time about it. But I forgive you. Try to remain calm. Make sure to hid all the letters I send you. If the
Nazis find them, we could be discovered. Remember, I will always love you.
I cried until I felt like I just couldn’t cry anymore. I couldn’t sleep no matter how hard I tried. I had never been away from my parents for more than a week. It hurt so much not know where everyone was. The twins had been away from them for three days, and Elisabeth had never been away from them at all. She must be so scared. For the first time in my life, I wished I wasn’t a Jew.
