I woke up late in the day. It was such a lovely day outside. It had been raining for days. I desperately wanted to go outside, but the Morgans wouldn’t let me. It was to high of a risk. If anyone realized that I wasn’t Emily, we would all be in trouble. I got up and walked to the kitchen. I saw something was amiss as soon as I walked in. The Morgans where siting at the table. Mr. Morgan had his arms wrapped around Mrs.Morgan, who where crying. There was 2 women and 2 men siting across from them. I had never seen them before, but they where crying also. One of the women looked up at me.
“What’s going on here?” I asked. “Who are these people, mommy?”
One of the men wiped his eyes and blew his nose. He walked up to me.
“Sophia?” He said.
“No! Thats not my name! Who are you and what are you doing here?”
“Emily ..... and your parents where captured last night. Your father was ill and he coughed last night when the Nazi soldiers searched our home. I’m sorry to inform you but.........they took them away.”
I busted into tears.
“No!” I yelled as I fell to the ground. “What about my brothers and sister? Are they all right?”
The man looked down at me and said. “They took your sister, I’m sorry.”
He said. “No!!!” “Damn you, Hitler!”
I ran into my room and cried. I put my head in the
pillow. My mom and father are gone. And poor little Elie, she is just five. She must be so scared. And the man said my father was already sick. Was he going to live? And the last thing my mom and I did together was fight. There was a knock at the door.
“Go away!” “Leave me alone!” I yelled.
“Sophia, let me in please.” It was Mrs. Morgan’s voice.
“All right! But just you! No one else!”
She walked in and sat on my bed. “Your mother
and father wrote you a letter. So did Emily. She also wants you to have this.”
She sat something down on my bed. When she left, I read the letters.
My dearest daughter,
Hello sweetie. If you are reading this, it means that we have been captured. We hope you never get found. We will love you always. We will be together again. They can kill us, but they can not kill our spirit. If we don’t make it out of her alive, take care of your siblings. Stay safe and try to remain calm. Don’t blame yourself, you did nothing wrong. Stay safe and pray every night that we come back to you safely. Love you and take care. Be thankful and respectful to Melissa and Charlie. Treat them like you would us.
Love always, mom and dad
Dear twin sister (ha ha ha),
Ok time to get serious for a second. I guess if you received this letter, they have found us. We will be all right. I have faith that we will get threw this. Don’t blame yourself. You did nothing wrong. Being Jewish isn’t a crime, or at least it shouldn’t be. You can’t let them get to you. Soon everything will be back to normal. When I get back...maybe we can hang out together or something. I will get out of here... you have my word on it.
