When it comes to writing do you think there is a better time of day to write? I've heard that it's a good idea to write the first thing in the morning.

I tend to write throughout the day. I have pencil & paper in my pants pocket in case I need to jot down something. I've always done my best writing at night. Unfortunately, that was when I also needed to sleep. Never slept well during school years. I feel the best time to write is when it hits the individual. Also a certain place may trigger a writing frenzy. For me, it's always been in bed lol I think it's because my mind tends to keep going & when all's quiet, that's when I can hear the ideas more clearly.

ZandraJoi, That's a valid point. Dolly Parton once said that she is always writing, sometimes with pen and paper sometimes with pencil and napkin just whatever she can find at the moment when something significant hits her like a line or an interesting concept. It's good practice to always be mindful and capture those thoughts as they come.

It's important to note down anything that comes to mind throughout the day. But in terms of actually starting on the actual content, for me, the best time has to be at night. I'm just a lot more effective at night.

I guess I can relate to this however, timing is everything - if it gets too late in the evening I am way too tired and decision fatigued to even think about writing.

I have a notebook with me at all times and if that's not possible, such as on the floor at work, I have the notes app in my cellphone. I'm constantly jotting down random thoughts, lines, or phrases throughout the day. As far as actually sitting down and building a piece, it depends entirely on the day, my energy level, my mental state, the amount of distractions, etc. I do tend to find very early in the morning or late at night are my most productive, when everyone else in the house is asleep.
