This is one of the adulting things that I tend to drag my feet on annually. So much, that I put it off until my husband has to take care of it.

I want the money back, and so I got it done already, just waiting for the IRS to pay me.

Always weird to hear that you guys have to do your taxes. I love that the UK government handles it all for us and we don't have to worry about it (unless you're a business or self-employed)

Impressive. Our system is too flawed currently.

Too flawed is an extreme understatement but at least it somewhat works.

And if there is ever a time they take too much, you'll get a refund pretty quickly. The majority of people will never encounter any issues with the system.

Do you guys do tax receipts? Where you hand in all your purchase receipts at the end of the year for deductions?

Like all purchases or just certain things? I don't think most people do that. VAT is the only thing we have to worry about and that's automatically added to all prices.

I know over here in the states it can be everything or certain things, I think that what makes ours a bit harder.

I don't whether you guys like it but from an outsider, I have no idea why they've made your tax system so complicated. Just seems absurd really. If the government knows how much tax you owe them, why not just make that process easier

Oh no I wouldn't trust our government to properly allocate our funds owed for us - there's a system but it has its flaws. For example, a lot of military families here in Texas that are deployed to the border are still experiencing payment issues. There is a clear divide between Federal and state government here so that's when things get fuzzy. We have sales tax which is tax collected from purchases to fund the local government, schools, roads, etc. Some states have individual income tax however not here in Texas. Property taxes are higher compared to others though. Our family's taxes are pretty straightforward so we don't itemize deductions.

I completely forgot about the fact you guys have states with different laws. I guess it's a lot easier over here to have an automated system where the taxes are the same for most things.

Yeah my friend moved to a different state but still works in mine so has two state taxes to deal with.

It's even worse for the US citizens that live in other countries I believe. If you still have US citizenship, I believe you have to pay tax in the country you live in and US tax.

The pandemic relief I got last year botched my return, so all I got was enough for a small lunch for myself

My husband does ours. He took accounting in college many years ago & is really good with numbers. I'm good with words lol He does it but each year he says it's getting harder with all the newer rules he has to keep up on. I wish they made it easier. Just tax as we go about daily life.

Do the majority of people in the US pay someone or software to help them with their taxes? I read something about these companies lobbying the government to help keep it that way.

There are free options, but I rather pay someone to do it to be error free or free of any faults. The people I go to only charge $80 which is reasonable.

I did mine right at the beginning of February, as soon as I had all the paperwork I needed. I already got my return back and paid down some debt, putting the rest toward a couple of upcoming trips I'm taking.

I really hope I get a better return next year, kind of hurting me that I didn't get as much as planned.

In a way... that's good that you're not having them withhold as much, that means you're using your money for your own expenses/investments (hopefully earning interest for yourself) and not just lending it to the government with zero interest.
