I'm torn by this advice because I've always been taught that longevity at a workplace demonstrates reliability and if you're compensated well and you enjoy the work place there's really no reason to look elsewhere. However, I've heard that switching jobs now and then is a great way to get a higher salary. What is your opinion around this?

When I was in the workforce I used to change jobs every 5-6 years. Each time I did I felt that I had taken an advancement and had moved up in life.

Switching jobs can be good but it doesn't mean you have to do it. If you're paid and treated well at your current place, there is no point trying to change jobs and starting over at a new place. If you think you deserve more money, then go for it I guess.

I've always been told this, if you are a person who wants to learn more/get paid more it is what is driving this. But I don't need a lot more money at this point and rather stay at my current company, such a great place to work for.

Yeah, you kind of have to think carefully about what your current company is like. It's a pretty important debate where you have to consider happiness vs. more money. Being at a higher paid job where you are extremely unhappy is not always great.

Pretty much this, one of the people I work with, I interviewed for a job they were previously at and got denied and from hearing the stories on the place, I was lucky to not be hired.

My mum had a similar experience except she got the job. But they were taking forever to handle the admin side and call up for the references. Ended up staying at her current place and in the end, she was very happy. People did not have good things to say about the new place.

I've also seen what staying at a job for a long time entails, you get more leeway it seems which can be good for tough times.

Yeah, this really isn't for me. I suck at job hunting/interviews... would much rather keep the job I'm settled in!

another reason why I want to stay, job interviews just kill me and drag me down, way too much stress and worry.

One good thing about remaining at a job would be seniority when it came down to laying people off during hard times. Companies tend to keep the workers who have been there 10+ years over the ones who were last hired. Last hired first fired is the old saying. That happened to me when I worked at an advertising agency. I had been there a year or maybe a year and a half and they were hurting financially. They chose to keep the other lady who should have retired, made 3 times the amount I did...but she had the experience I did not.

Seniority can definitely help you out with certain companies but it's important to remember that some businesses will just not care about you. So whilst you will be loyal to them for a long time when times get tough, they won't hesitate to get rid of you. Of course, that will only be the case with really crappy companies that don't care about their employees at all.

big box retail jobs for one, read some heart breaking stories on game stop reddit of how people turn stores around and got tossed out in the end.
