I've been posting on boards for about 11 or 12 years now. I must confess that I don't do well on the above mentioned type of boards. Most of the time I will delete my account out of frustration, and on a few boards have even been banned.
In fact this and two others are the only general discussion boards that I'm still on. The issue is that I always seem to get into problems with the admins. It usually is due to my penchant for being outspoken, or my off the wall humor. It's always the same, the admins. will PM me and I over react because I don't appreciate lectures at my age. (I'm 70) Admins. do not like forceful responses from their members. But I am what I am, and at my age am not likely to change anytime soon.
Another issue I've had is with mods. I get my defenses up when they come around, can't help it.
Where I do well is with technical boards and also with political boards. With the former I have a certain expertise that I can share. With political boards I am allowed to be me. I have been a member on one of these boards for over 10 years and have logged over 7,500 posts.
I do believe in future that I will stick with these two types of boards and leave the rest alone. Frankly speaking I just don't fit in with them. But I will stay here for sure as for some reason, I haven't gotten myself into any trouble as of yet. lol

Sounds like you should have made your own site so you can be who you can be Kind of why I run my own site, I don't like rules that are always staring me down or staff that abuse their power.

Should check out this awesome general discussion forum called Discussion Hub (it's mine ). I think what you said is a fair problem that a lot of people tend to encounter. Way too many general discussion forums have rules which makes the community boring.

The only issue I have is when I check out a board and I get the NOT SECURE warning from my virus protectors. Then of course I hit the road never to be seen again. lol P.S. sorry ash but I cannot join your fine board. You have an admin. on there as one of your members. This jerk actually stole one of my posts that I wrote about grudges and used it as his own. Plagiarism, and when I confronted him on it he went mute. I was so outraged that I deleted my account from his board, it was not a ProBoard. If I were to run into him on your board, sparks would fly.

I guess I understand what you mean. Things aren't quite as they once were with discussions of any kind, and online discussions are the most difficult, because you don't have the usual in-person cues you can rely on to have a full understanding of the other person. I mean, I'm quite capable of vehemently disagreeing with someone and then having a beer with them.

Scooter, having a disagreement with a member is one thing. I can stand on my own two feet quite well. But when it happens with an admin. that is a different story. What I have noticed is that they are usually very cool and diplomatic in public. But are sometimes horrible people when they PM you. Kind of like a Jekyl and Hyde personality thing.
It's as if they feel they have the right to lecture you, but we members do not have the right to argue back to them on =THEIR= board...totally ridiculous.

For a second, I misread that and thought my other admin had done that to you! No worries, you're always welcome over there if you do change your mind. I think we have a block button that might help with that lol.

It's as if they feel they have the right to lecture you, but we members do not have the right to argue back to them on =THEIR= board...totally ridiculous. To a certain point, that's correct. If I'm the guy that's actually paying for the space, then it's ultimately my rules. I don't see a problem with that part.
I think the actual problem is when admins start feeling "the weight of the badge", to borrow a metaphor, and just make the board into their own personal fiefdom. The BOFH has been a problem since the old days when we hand-cranked the Internet, and it will almost certainly continue to be because people can be goobers and not know how to handle the exercise of authority. Heck, on my own forums, I have a thread talking about exactly this problem with admins on the phpBB board.
My own rules on my forums are short and scant, because I prefer to have a lot of leeway in dealing with things; I don't want to be in a situation where I'm "forced" to act in a certain way when I feel there are extenuating circumstances. I don't know if that's the right thing to do, necessarily, but it's served me well so far.

I am somewhat arrogant, I'll admit to that. Being arrogant I have zero tolerance for any admin. assuming that they can address me like they are a school principal talking down to a frightened schoolchild in their PM's. In real life I would make mincemeat out of them, as I am not a wallflower type. If I do not tolerate anyone berating me in real life, why would I in my virtual life? Also there is the issue of some admin. being uneducated, half of them can't even string a coherent sentence together, let alone spell. ProBoards ought to insist on a mandatory I.Q. test. Fail it and you cannot have your own board. I feel that this would solve a lot of problems. lol

I dunno, man...I don't see arrogant. You're opinionated, which is fine - so am I. But I don't see you aggrandizing yourself or putting anyone else down. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to be spoken to with respect.

About 4 months ago I deleted my account on a board where I had amassed about 1,000 posts. I at the time felt that a certain mod was over stepping her authority. I rejoined yesterday now starting again with zero posts, and have been blown away by the welcome. It seems that I was missed. However even though the admin. and 3 mods have joined in the welcome, the mod who I had the issue with, has chosen =NOT= to welcome me back. lol

@lbj glad to consider you a regular here at SD! That's unfortunate that certain individuals have made it difficult for you to consider their forums as 'home'.
We don't really have dedicated technical or political areas here at Serene Distraction but happy to and establish those dedicated areas if there's interest.

There has been much movement on that board that I deleted myself from 4 months ago. The mod who I was having issues with is now calling me "friend". I am being told that after I left she publicly apologized in a comment thread for her part in our squabble. Also the staff are setting about to return my 1,000 posts on my profile avatar that I lost when I deleted my account. So my previous post count will be included in what I now have.
Everyone has been very cool and nice towards me in welcoming me back. All's well that ends well I guess. lol
