Before you write a story what is typically your process? Do you think about your characters in depth and write out their characteristics and such before you dive into a story? Do you create an outline from start to finish drawing out the layout of your story?
I don't think I've ever done this myself which is probably why I have so many unfinished works. Your thoughts?

It depends. A lot of times, I will just start writing and I'll get a scene or a segment down on paper. Once I've done that and appeased the need to get it down, I'll look back on it and be like "ok, where could this go?", "who are these people?", "what is their journey/purpose?", "how did they get to this point?"
Then I start building a very loose outline. As I write more, certain things will firm up while others get tossed entirely.

That's awesome. I've never done even any of that. I kind of just let the scene and characters unfold on their own on the blank page it's usually so unplanned. lol
I will have to give the pre-writing steps a chance perhaps I'll actually complete something longer than a prose some day!
