I'm working on getting into spoken word poetry (I don't have any recorded so don't ask.) This is one I've been stuck on for a while. I assume the story will help build itself eventually. But I don't know where the next line is. AS I was typing this out here I was inspired to write way more then I came to write here. It's still a first draft, and it's still unfinished,
Do you remember when we were superheroes?
How I had super strength
and could stop bullets with my chest.
You could fly
And not just fly, but at speeds
Man barely knows now.
Mike could read minds,
and change the world with his thoughts.
Jenny, she could control the weather.
We were going to change the world.
I was willing to stand in front of any bullet,
Look the gunman in the eye, and say "stop."
You had all these lofty idea --
Probably because you had seen the lofts.
Mike could see into man's heads and hearts, and know
Exactly what they need.
And Jenny, she could control the weather.
What happened?
Was it that weekend I broke you heart?
You no longer were willing to pick yourself up
off the ground.
Can I explain?
I was afraid, you were the only one
Who could make me feel weak.
What happened?
Is it because Mike won the lottery,
He only could see greed and contempt
And he forgot to look deeper for what others really thought
We know Jenny blamed herself -- for Katrina
Those waves hit, and they said she died in an electrical storm
1000 miles away -- in Pennsylvania.
What happened?
Is it that we're afraid to try?
WE didn't used to, we used to make leaps of faith
Knowing wings would catch us if they were needed
Knowing nothing could take us down
Knowing we would always know the truth
Knowing the sun would shine down. Always.
