I LOVED THIS ONE! I've seen different versions of this movie/play and I think this one was really good too - the songs just take me back to the days when I was in chorus lol This movie made me listen to the lyrics for what they were about...I think back in middle school i was more about making the songs sound good. haha. Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried were awesome - even Russel Crowe wasn't bad either!

I saw this on Tuesday. I agree that it was good, but I felt it didn't really live up to all the hype for me. Don't get me wrong, those actors really inhabited their characters and the setwork and cinemetography were breathtaking, but it wasn't quite what I was hoping for.
I know the big thing they raved about was "They're singing live during shooting! It's LIVE but in a movie! Wow!" That's kind of what made it just a very good movie and not a great one for me, though.
First, I'm not a huge fan of Hugh Jackman's live singing voice. He is a very talented guy, but he's not very disciplined when it comes to singing live. The emotion was there in spades (which was great), but at times the lack of vocal control bugged me and detracted from a few moments of the film.
Also, I did not like the constant vibratto in Amanda Seyfried's performance. She has a great voice and I wish she had showcased that more. I know the vibratto was used to show Cosette's frailty, but I feel like it would have been better served if used more sparingly.
I loved Anne Hathaway's performance. I felt like she really owned Fantine's despair and was able to get that across without sacrificing vocal quality. I'd really love to see her do a broadway show after this.
Russel Crowe surprised me. He did a fairly good job and I actually liked him as Javert better than I liked Hugh Jackman as Valjean.
The rest of the cast did well, also. I really enjoyed Helena Bonham Carter and Sasha Baren Cohen as the Tenardiers. They were far more light and entertaining than any previous depictions I've seen of the couple (usually darker and more sinister rather than amusing). Samantha Barks as Eponine took my breath away. She performed beautifully and performed one of my favorite songs from the show ("On My Own") fantastically. I also really liked Eddie Redmayne as Marius, Aaron Tveit as Enjolras and Isabelle Allen as Young Cosette. Daniel Huttlestone as Gavroche stole the show for me though. He was the perfect balance between adorable and sneaky.
Overall, I enjoyed it and will probably buy it when it hits DVD. I just would have preferred some different choices for Amanda Seyfried and Hugh Jackman's performances.
