Wreck-It Ralph is Disney's animated ode to retro video games, but it is also so much more than that. The story of Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly), the villain in the arcade classic Fix-It Felix Jr., Wreck-It Ralph packs a pretty emotional punch.
When Ralph grows tired of the stigma of being the villain, he decides to try and become a hero. How is he supposed to do that? Well, at the end of the game, the Hero always gets a medal. So, Ralph goes in search of a medal. In his journey, he manages to make a bit of a mess of things, unleashing a threat on the whole gamedom. But with the help of a spitfire little glitch named Vanellope (voiced by Sarah Silverman), a tough-as-nails cammando (voiced by Jane Lynch) and Felix Jr himself (voiced by Jack McBrayer), Ralph learns the values of friendship, bravery, honor, and what it means to be a real hero.
The thing I loved most about this movie are the affectionate nods to video game history. Not only are there more cameos by classic game characters than I can count, but there are touches of animation that throw back rather beautifully to the pixellated days of old before bringing you right back to today's high-def clarity. The story, while being a classic one itself, also manages to surprise you. There's even a twist at the end that I didn't see coming (though after seeing it again, there are definite hints hidden throughout - well played Disney, well played).
Wreck-It Ralph will make you laugh. It will make you nostalgic whether you grew up playing video games or not. It will even tug at your heartstrings and, possibly, make you tear up a little. I know it did me.
I give Wreck-It Ralph 5 Thumbs Up. It is definitely a must-see for everybody.
