Yeah this a fanfiction for the anime Saiyuki (Reload) that I am currently writing, it is going to be long and so far it is shaping up to be long and I am worried that it may be too long to post so far so maybe I should just post the first 5 pages or somthing.
When nothing matters
Looking back on it now it was truly foolish of me, nothing really matters anymore but I was still so foolish. The moon was out that first night now I recall, for some reason I was standing outside. I didn’t really care about the demons back then, now it’s different. Although little did I know that my life would have ended soon after that little trip in the woods that is it would have ended if he didn’t come.
Back then, that was when nothing mattered…ever.
Chapter One- All or nothing
I sat down by the small river that flowed through the forest the stars sparkled brightly in the sky, maybe they were warning me, warning me of things to come. Back then all I really wanted was love and if some cute walked by I’d most likely pounce on him, saying that I was afraid of the dark. He would hold me and tell me that everything was ok when really it wasn’t, at least not for me.
I stood up I couldn’t drown myself in self-pity for more then three hours could I? Actually I really could do it for about three days more even, probably. Wiping away my tears I started to walk back to my village, I could hear sticks cracking behind me. I started to walk faster but it soon turned into a run, I can’t run very fast and it didn’t help that I tripped. I quickly turned around and saw a demon standing there, claws now right up against my neck, ears pointed and it’s sharp teeth glinting. It was going to kill me!
“Ahhhh!” I screamed, the demon covered up my mouth with his hand so I would shut up. I closed my eyes, tears streamed down as I relaxed my hand. I gulped as the demon carefully took his hand away from my mouth.
“Now are you quite done screaming?” He asked, his back was hunched and was not the prettiest thing to be looking at. Reluctantly however I nodded, now he was definitely going to kill me.
He reached down and scraped his long nails down the side of my throat. I heard a bang and blood splattered on my face. I couldn’t feel anything. Shit. I thought to myself. I’m dead! A man with blonde hair walked up to me, he was tall. Was he the one who shot me and why? Behind him stood a kid only about an inch taller then me, that one had brown hair. Standing next to him was a red head and next to him was a man with a dragon on his shoulder. I coughed the smoke was killing me, I looked up closely at the blonde and the red one, they were both smoking. Gross.
“Hey kid,” the blonde one said to me, “are you ok?”
I blinked and then I realized that I wasn’t dead, I looked back up them. My hands were shaking, what was happening.
“I-I,” I stuttered, where was my voice? I guess that’s what happens when you are scared.
“Hey Sanzo you didn’t shoot her did ya?” The kid said in a cheery voice.
I looked up at them; they seemed nice enough I guess. They were just a bunch of tall guys and a dragon.
“We heard you scream,” said the red head, “you ok?”
“I, I need a hug,” I said looking at the ground. I pulled my knees up to my chest and hugged them, tears of fear now coming through, “someone please hold me!”
The one with the dragon smiled, he placed the dragon on the ground and walked up to me. He placed his arms around me, his breath was warm on my check, even though he was a stranger and probably much older then me it was ok, I didn’t feel threatened. I leaned back gently on to his chest, now I could hear his heartbeat, he was warm too.
“Hakkai,” the kid moaned, “I’m hungry can’t we just leave now?”
“Shhh Goku,” Hakkai said.
Hakkai? I thought. I rolled over so my head was now leaning in his arm; I hope he wasn’t getting annoyed by me lying on him for so long.
“Are you ok?” He asked in a quiet mannered tone.
Slowly I nodded, “A-a bit shaken u-up of course,” my teeth started to chatter, “n-no thanks t-to your friend pulling the t-trigger on me.”
“That probably was a bit impulsive of him,” Hakkai said with a laugh, “but it did save your life.”
“Yeah you should be lucky we heard you scream,” the red head said.
“So,” Hakkai said putting his hands on my shoulders and sitting me up, “what is your name?”
I looked up at him, he had half a set of glasses on and funny earrings, his ears were rounded, and come to think of it all of their ears were. That’s a relief at least they were human.
“Ai,” I said softly, “my name is Ai.”
Hakkai smiled, “Ai is a pretty name,” he leaned against a tree and bobbed down in front of me, “as you probably heard Goku whine my name is Hakkai, and the one who shot the bullet is Sanzo.”
I nodded trying to take all of this in, “What about him?” I said quietly pointing at the red head.
He walked up to me and looked me in the eye from about 5 inches away, “Me? My names Gojyo!”
I coughed, putting my hand over my mouth, “No offence but I don’t really like the smell of cigarettes.”
Hakkai laughed smiling down at me, “Now you see what I have to put up with!”
Sanzo grunted crossing his arms, “If the kid is okay we really do have to be getting on out way may I remind you!”
Hakkai turned his head and looked up at Sanzo, “That is true,” he paused looking back down at me, “we can’t exactly leave this girl to her own defenses in this forest. We already know for a fact that there was one demon here, what's not to say that there are more.”
“Where do ya live?” Sanzo said roughly, “we’ll drop ya off home then leave.”
I gripped onto Hakkai’s shirt, I didn’t know it back then but I would be holding onto his shirt for a long time after that.
“Don’t go!” I said, “We only just met don’t leave me now!”
Hakkai looked down at me with a sad look, “I don’t think you understand what we have to do,” he slowly removed my hand from his shirt, “our journey is dangerous and we can’t stay here with you.”
Tears streamed down my cheeks, “Don’t you guys like me!”
“You’re a bit young for me,” Gojyo said, “but if you had an older sister maybe.”
“Your sick,” I whispered under my breath.
According to what I had just seen Sanzo seemed to be leader, an arrogant bastard at that too. He only asked me if I was ok before because that’s the polite thing to do. Goku on the other hand was an irresponsible brat who only seemed to care about his stomach and not about me. Gojyo was a pig, apart from the fact that he breathed smoke in my face he just seems like someone who’s only friends are girls that he spends one night with. Hakkai was the best in my books, he seemed modest and kind, but even he wanted to leave me.
“So,” I said, “where are you going and why is it so dangerous?”
Sanzo looked over at Gojyo who shrugged then turned his head to Goku, Goku looked over at Hakkai who nodded back at Sanzo.
“You see how that demon attacked you?” Sanzo said.
I looked down at the demon and nodded, but what does that have to do with anything.
“The demons weren’t always like this someone is making them like this,” Sanzo continued, “We will stop them.”
I closed my eyes and leant back against the tree, going on a journey like that would be fun.
“Hakuryu,” Hakkai called to the dragon, “let’s take her back home.”
The dragon glowed and slowly morphed into a green jeep, Sanzo walked over to the jeep and sat in the passenger seat. Gojyo and Goku followed him and sat in the back.
Hakkai stood up and reached his hand down to me, foolishly I took it and he stood me up and took me to the jeep.
I shouldn’t have fallen asleep in the back; I should’ve spent that last hour awake with them instead of five minutes when they woke me up. I’m surprised I managed to fall asleep on Gojyo; I was even more surprised that he didn’t smell of smoke. Gojyo was actually sort of kind, letting me sleep on him while Hakkai was driving.
But foolishly I didn’t think of the future, if I had known back then what was to happen in the future maybe I would’ve acted differently but alas I didn’t.
I felt someone nudge my shoulder; I rubbed my eyes and looked up to see Gojyo smiling back down at me. I sat up Goku, Sanzo and Hakkai where out of the jeep.
“Is this your village?” Gojyo asked.
I nodded sadly; my time with these wonderful people had come to an end. I felt like crying but I didn’t want to make them wait any longer on their behalf.
I jumped out of the jeep and swayed a bit, my knees collapsed a bit like they do when you just wake up. I stood up and started to walk back to my house, I lived alone so I really could go with them but they wouldn’t want me coming. They all followed me back to my house, I should’ve talked to them but I couldn’t, I knew they were going to leave me so what was the point?
Finally we reached my door, I slowly unlocked it and walked inside. I looked back at them with sad eyes.
I looked down at the floor and started to cry, “Please,” I said, “I know I’m just a kid to you but please let me come with you!”
Hakkai put his hand on my shoulder and bent down to my height, “It’s not that we think you’re a kid or even that you’re a girl,” he said with a smile, “it’s because this journey is even dangerous to us and we don’t want to get innocents involved.”
“What,” I said, “so you just want me to forget about this? What if a demon attacks me who will save me?”
“If you come along with us you will definitely be attacked,” Sanzo said.
Gojyo sighed and wiped my tears of my cheeks, “Stop crying,” he said, “I hate seeing any girl no matter how old cry.”
I looked up at him, know he seemed to be nice, but Hakkai was the nice one wasn’t he?
I laughed to myself and lifted my head up, “No offence guys but I think you need a girl to come with you!” I said, hopefully I could bribe them, I looked at Goku, “I’m not sure the quantity of how much I can cook but I do know how to.”
Goku looked at me with sparkly eyes.
I smiled, “I could cook while you guys fight,” I looked up at Gojyo and Hakkai, “and if you get hurt I can treat your wounds!”
“No,” Sanzo said. He must be the party pooper, he would be almost impossible to convince.
“As Hakkai said before we don’t want to get innocents involved,” he said turning away, “plus I already have Gojyo and Goku complaining at me I don’t need a third complainer!”
I smiled then grabbed Gojyo and Goku around the neck with my arms, “I can shut them up for you!”
Sanzo somehow seemed intrigued although Hakkai seemed more likely to accept my offer.
“Fine!” Sanzo said in an irritated tone, “but stay out of our battles, don’t complain and don’t get yourself hurt or killed!”
I smiled letting go of Gojyo and Goku running over to Sanzo and hugging him, Sanzo stood there with a blank expression on his face. He looked over at Hakkai I turned my head. Hakkai was smiling but in the sort of, ‘I’m terrified of this man’, look. Judging by his face I was guessed Sanzo wasn’t particularly happy. I let go and looked around myself, all four of them surrounded me I was in my happy place.
“I’ll be right back just got to get some stuff!” I said with a smile as I ran into my house.
I ran around getting ingredients for food and stuff that could help with all sorts of wounds and injuries. I packed them all up into a bag and put the bag on my back, I looked around my house sadly. I didn’t know when I was going to see it next, back then I thought I was going to be back within a year and just go on life as normal. That is why I was foolish. I was foolish for thinking that I could spend happy times with Sanzo and his friends as well. I was truly foolish.
I opened the door and looked at them, they all seemed like they were talking, but what about? I would never find out.
“Ok so you are ready to go?” Hakkai asked me.
I nodded as we all walked back to the jeep, Hakkai sat in the front and got her started, Sanzo slowly sat next to him. Gojyo, Goku and I had a bit of a predicament on our hands however. There was really only room for two people in the back and we had three we needed to squeeze in, it’s easy when one is practically on ones lap sleeping but we were all wide awake, or were we? Tonight was tiring and I rubbed my eyes again and yawned.
“If you and Gojyo don’t mind I’ll sleep on your laps,” I said to Goku, “just hurry up please.”
Gojyo and Goku shrugged and sat down in the back; I crawled onto their laps and closed my eyes.
I wished that Gojyo was Hakkai but no such luck belonged to me. The engine running was somehow quiet; maybe Hakuryu was doing it for me so I could sleep. Just as I was falling asleep they all thought I was asleep and started to talk.
“We shouldn’t bring her,” Sanzo said putting his cigarette out, “it’s dangerous.”
“It could have been dangerous even if we didn’t bring her,” Hakkai said, “she could’ve tried looking for us on her own.”
“She’s still just a kid,” Gojyo said leaning back, “bummer.”
“What do you mean by that?” Goku asked in his childish voice.
“Well if she was our age things could be interesting,” Gojyo said with a laugh.
Hakkai chuckled, “You better not speak like that while she is awake, you might scare her.”
Sanzo put his chin on his hand and looked out the side, “You three are going to scare her.”
Hakkai nodded. Gojyo looked down at me and Goku yawned.
“Lets just let her sleep,” Hakkai said, “We don’t want to wake her up now do we?”
I remember thinking how nice they were, and thinking about all the fun we will have. I never told them that I was awake when they were talking it really wasn’t relevant. Maybe we were all fools, maybe just maybe if we all did something different things would have changed. Maybe.
