This past weekend in a local newspaper, there was a list of slang terms native to my province (which I will post below). About half of these I've never used in my life, but still, good to know. I was just: (a) wondering if any of you have heard of any of these terms, and (b) if any of you have local slang that you'd like to share. Alrighty, here it is (oh, and the author is Bartley Kives by the way, just to give the man some credit):
Hucking the Jambusters or How to speak Manitoban
ANISHINABE(K), ANISH -- noun / or adjective Ojibway.
AUTOPAC -- noun / public auto insurance, or a place that sells it.
BACK LANE -- noun / alleyway.
BEAR BOX -- noun / bear-proof storage device for food or garbage, usually metal.
BEER BASH -- noun / an afternoon social at a university campus. See social.
BOOSTERS -- noun / jumper cables.
BOOTER -- noun / the act of stepping through lake or river ice and getting your boots wet.
BUT IT'S A DRY COLD -- retort / a commonly uttered lie.
DEET -- noun / acronym for pesticide N, n diethyl-m-toluamide, the most effective means of keeping mosquitoes off your skin.
FALL SUPPER -- noun / a public dinner in a rural community or small town, usually in September and October. Originally "fowl supper," as the main course was goose, duck, or passenger pigeon, during the pioneer days.
FLYING RATS -- noun / Canada geese, to farmers; herring gulls to fishers.
GIV 'ER -- imperative / command enthusiastic form of encouragement to try something, as in "Giv 'er some juice and see if she starts."
GOLDEYE -- noun / smoked freshwater fish, Hiodon alosoides, found only in and around Manitoba.
HALLOWEEN APPLES -- exclamation / Halloween greeting used in Manitoba instead of "Trick or treat."
HUCK -- tr. verb / Throw or toss, usually without great regard for accuracy.
HURRY HARD! -- exclamation / curling-rink version of give 'er.
JAMBUSTER -- noun / jelly doughnut, usually covered in icing sugar.
JAM (out) -- verb / to back out or otherwise renege on a commitment.
JAMMER (also jam tart) -- noun / one who jams out.
JEANNE'S CAKE -- noun (proprietary) / a bland but addictive layer cake with a cookie bottom.
LC -- noun / government-owned liquor store, short for Manitoba Liquor Control Commission.
LOOGAN -- noun / hooligan or rowdy person. Supposedly a Chicago term brought to Manitoba during Prohibition.
MEEGWETCH -- greeting / literally, "thank you" in Ojibway.
MEGABARN -- noun / uncomplimentary term for industrial-sized hog operations.
MONKEY TRAIL -- noun / trails (esp. unpaved) for mountain-biking, etc.
MUSKIE -- noun / the muskellunge (Esox masquinongy), a large, aggressive freshwater fish similar to the northern pike.
NIP -- noun / a hamburger, usually but not exclusively at Salisbury House restaurants.
OLD DUTCH -- noun (proprietary) / a brand of potato chips found only on the Canadian and U.S. Prairies.
OUT EAST -- noun, adverb / Toronto, southern Ontario, or any part of Canada east of Thunder Bay, Ont.
'PEG CITY (or The 'Peg) -- noun / Winnipeg.
PEROGIES -- noun (pl.) / flour dumplings stuffed usu. with potato, cheddar, cottage cheese, or sauerkraut.
PERIMETER VISION -- noun / inability of Winnipeggers to see or understand the rest of Manitoba outside the Perimeter Highway.
PICKEREL -- noun / western Canadian term for a fish known elsewhere as walleye.
SAL'S -- noun / a Salisbury House restaurant.
SEV -- noun / a convenience store, usually 7-Eleven.
SHIVAREE -- noun (regional, rural Man. and Sask.) / a noisy ceremony to serenade newlyweds on their wedding night by banging pots, pans, etc.
SCHMOO TORTE -- noun / a light, nut-flecked cake topped with whipping cream and caramel sauce.
SMOKIE -- noun / a fat, barbecue-friendly sausage.
SOCIAL -- noun / boozy, informal fundraising party for charities, non-profit organizations, or couples trying to finance a wedding.
SOFT DRINKS -- noun (pl.) / soda pop. Considered quaint or archaic elsewhere.
TANSI -- greeting / Cree equivalent of "Hi, how are you?"
'TOBAN -- noun / or adjective Northwestern Ontario term for a Manitoban tourist, sometimes considered derogatory.
TOWNIE -- noun / year-round resident of summer vacation community. Antonym of "cottager."
UKE -- adjective or noun / Ukrainian.
VENDOR -- noun / a privately owned beer store attached to or adjacent a hotel (as opposed to an LC).
WRENIJKE (or varenikes/vareniki) -- noun (pl.) / Mennonite/Russian variants of perogies.
And I have one to add as well...
DAINTIES: dessert squares put out at social gatherings, such as brownies and Nanaimo bars and the like. Apparently means women's underwear in other places. This misunderstanding was discovered when my mom asked a friend to bring some dainties to a get-together.
