My school is holding a poetry contest, and I would like to enter. I've been curious about poetry for some time now, but I've never really looked into it. I mean, we study poetry here and there in English, but I sometimes have a hard time understanding it. If possible, could someone please help me understand, or even help me how to write poetry? Thanks!

There's no real way to tell someone how to write poetry ... just begin writing.

Hmm...
When I want to write, I just usually come up with a main idea, and then just write. I'll get images that come to my mind when I think about what I'm writing about, and it's just... wala! It might be easy for you to think of some things, and see what comes to mind.
If you don't know what to write about, just see if you can write about your feelings. Write about a person (that's what I usually do) or write about something you see or hear, or whatever.
When you think about writing a poem the first few times it seems hard or confusing, but it's really very easy once you get into it.
