When we got there, the smell of fresh food filled the air. There was chicken, corn, rice, and some odd looking dishes from America on the table. My family and I must but looked like pigs. We haven’t had a good meal in last seven years, especially in the last four months since my father last his job. Emily was an only child, So Elisabeth and the twins got bored quickly. They did have a dog to play with, but soon they got bored of playing with it. Then Elisabeth got sleepy and cranky.
Emily and I became fast friends. She liked the same things that I did. And mom said how much we looked alike. And the more I thought about it, we really did look alike. My parents decided to let me stay overnight . I haven’t stayed at someone’s house in about six years because I had so many chores to do at home. I was shocked when my mother told me I could stay. Mainly because my parents just met these people and they where already letting me stay over. That and since I’m a Jew, most of my old friends don’t want to talk to me anymore. I guess because they know being seen with a Jew could cost them their life.
Staying at her house that night was
fun and different. It was nice to be in a quiet house
without little kids running around.
“Are you OK?” Emily asked me. “You seem so quiet
suddenly.”
“Huh,” I said “Oh, no I’m fine, I was just thinking about something.”
“What about?”She asked looking at me very puzzled.
“Your thefirst friend that I’ve had in a long time.” What ?”She asked sounding shocked.
“Well not the first, but my first non- Jewish friend.” I replied quickly.
“Why?” She asked me
“Because, this is a hard time for Jews.” “Everyone
is scared of Hitler and his army.” I said.
“No oneknows what he is gonna do next.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,I didn’t mean to offend you.” She said softly.
“No,it’s OK, I need someone to talk to.” I said with a
small smile.
