~So in my English I class we had to read a Mythology book, and write a myth of our own. Mine isn't exactly great, and I've completely rushed the whole story (cause I waited until the day before it's due to do it ). The idea's kinda cute though
Long, long ago, in a civilization way more advanced than ours, there ruled a god named Jonalonafefifofaunachus. He was the god of knowledge, and to every new child born, he gave all of the knowledge they’d need in their lifetime. Many of the great novels and scientific formulas of that time were created by babies, just minutes old. As they grew into adults, there was nothing they couldn’t do. Well, almost nothing…
Every ten years, Jonalonafefifofaunachus would choose the first child who turned 13 on the fifth day of the third month, and give them a task. They had a year to complete this task, but it was very difficult. Each child who was faced with the task was told that there were severe consequences to not completing it. Faced with this threat, no one ever failed the task.
This particular year, the task was given to a boy named Nathaniel. Though he did not know what the task was going to be, he did not fear the consequences. He thought that since he was a part of the most advanced civilization ever, then there was nothing he couldn’t do.
On the fifth day of the third month, Nathaniel was just minutes away from turning 13. He was sitting in a room by himself, when he heard a loud sound. Smoke filled the room, and for a few seconds, he couldn’t see. When the smoke cleared out, Jonalonafefifofaunachus was standing in front of him. For a few minutes, they did not speak. Then Jonalonafefifofaunachus looked Nathaniel in the eyes and told him what the task was.
“As you know, Nathaniel, you will have a year to complete the task I am about to give you. Use your time wisely. I know you think you can do anything, but you might be overestimating your abilities.
“For this task, I will you give you an extremely difficult mathematical formula to figure out. It is one that no one has ever seen before. It is your job to teach it to everyone in the world. That should be simple enough. Good luck!” said Jonalonafefifofaunachus. Then he gave Nathaniel the formula. Nathaniel was about to ask what would happen if he did not complete the task, but he found that Jonalonafefifofaunachus had vanished.
As the days went by, Nathaniel taught a few people the formula, but he realized that it was harder than he expected. It took almost a whole week to teach one person! The formula really was more difficult than he had imagined. After half a year had gone by, Nathaniel had only taught about a fourth of the people in the world. Then he got really lazy. Instead of trying to teach people the formula, he spent time playing with friends, or just doing nothing.
When there was only a month left, Jonalonafefifofaunachus visited Nathaniel to let him know that time was almost up. He reminded Nathaniel that no one had ever failed the task before, and that the whole population of the world would hate him if he failed. After hearing that, Nathaniel worked harder than ever to complete the task, but time went by quickly. He only had a month to teach half of the world’s population. He tried hard to teach everyone else, but when time ran out, he was still not done.
He had failed. Jonalonafefifofaunachus visited Nathaniel one last time to give him a final message.
“Nathaniel, you are the first person to fail my task. You face terrible consequences for your actions. Not only will you suffer, but the whole world will suffer as well. Since you failed to teach the formula to the world, everyone will forget everything they’ve ever learned before. No one will know anything, and they’ll have to start civilization all over again.
“However, there will be opportunities to gain the knowledge back again. When each child turns 5 years old, they will enter something called School. They will learn in school until they are 18, and even after that, they will want to continue their learning into something called College.
“Schools and colleges will be dreadful to attend. Children will want to fake sickness to get out of going, and some will even skip it on a daily basis. They will get caught though, and when they’re forced to go back, they’ll blame you.”
When Nathaniel heard Jonalonafefifofaunachus’s words, he felt terrible. The whole world would hate him now. Even people living thousands of years after his time would hate him.
When the people of the world realized what had happened, they exiled Nathaniel to a deserted island. There he spent his days sad and lonely until he died.
Just as Jonalonafefifofaunachus predicted, students fake sickness, and skip school. The smart ones, however, have found ways to make school interesting and fun, and have started to enjoy going to school.
