In order to properly understand the precise and exquisite relationship that a Cape May girl holds with the ocean on which she resides, one must take into consideration the relationship that a young couple who must eventually be separated (such as at times of war) holds, because such is the only analogous example. The love which such a couple experiences can be called no less than divine, because their naiveity and utter innocence allows complete devotion and infatuation on both sides. However, upon the seperation, for example, when the young man of the couple is drafted and sent to war, the anxiety is overwhelming. The desire to return to one another permeates all coherant thought, and saturates all actions. Such can be compared, in the case of the Cape May girl, to the fall and winter. In autumn, the weather is still warm enough for the "couple" to enjoy one another's company, but the knowledge of what lies ahead consumes her. In the winter, however, she dreams of its company and aches for its touch.
Likewise, when the aforementioned awaiting woman receives word that her lover shall soon return, her heart leaps and time seems to go on indefinite haitus. No day, minute, or second can pass with sufficient speed, and she becomes conscious of each and every breath she takes. The same holds true for the man.
This exaggerated period of suffering, nervousness, and anxiousness can only signify in the relationship of the beach girl and her beach: the spring.
